Background of the Study
Following independence, Nigeria embarked on post-colonial language reforms to reassert indigenous languages and challenge the dominance of colonial languages. These reforms aimed to revive historical language practices that were suppressed during colonial rule (Chukwu, 2023). Efforts included the promotion of native languages in education, government, and media, as well as the development of orthographies and standardized grammar rules for previously marginalized languages. Although these reforms have had varying degrees of success, they have significantly influenced language practices by revitalizing traditional vocabulary and expressions. Historical language practices, once sidelined, have reemerged in cultural expressions and community education (Ibrahim, 2024). However, tensions persist between the legacy of colonial languages and revived indigenous practices, complicating language policy and public perception (Nwosu, 2025). This study explores how post-colonial language reforms have impacted historical language practices in Nigeria and examines the implications for contemporary language use.
Statement of the Problem
While post-colonial language reforms have attempted to revive indigenous language practices, their impact remains uneven and underexplored. Existing research often fails to capture the complex interplay between colonial legacies and revived traditional forms (Chukwu, 2023). This gap in understanding hinders effective language policy and cultural preservation efforts, as inconsistencies persist in educational and media representations of indigenous languages (Ibrahim, 2024). Addressing these shortcomings is crucial for reconciling historical language practices with modern communication needs.
